7 Reasons Why Christians Should Not Celebrate Halloween!

7 Reasons Why Christians Should Not Celebrate Halloween!

Blog, Faith Journal
Have you ever asked yourself if you should be trick or treating with your kids? This post lists 7 reasons why Christians should not celebrate Halloween. Another Halloween has come and gone and it seems that every year the craze gets a little bit bigger.  What is it that draws people to the crazy that is Halloween? All year long parents teach their children to be kind and to have good manners, that murder and evil is wrong and that talking to or accepting gifts from strangers is dangerous.  Then, on one day a year, we throw all that out the window and encourage our children to be nasty and bloody and accept lollies from strangers! It's just bazaar! At our Church morning tea the other day I overheard some…

“Mum, I don’t like being called religious!”

“Mum, I don’t like being called religious!”

Blog, Faith Journal
Today, over breakfast, my eldest said something really interesting. "Mum, I don't like being called religious!" At first I was like.. "wait... what??"  I mean, we are a Christian family.  We go to church, we pray, we believe in Jesus so what was she talking about?? She explained.  I listened.  We discussed.  And 40 minutes later I'm here blogging.  I've abandoned my scheduled writing for today to write down what we discussed and to share why I don't like being called religious now either. Reason #1 So my daughter's number 1 reason was this: Being called religious means I could be practising as a Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Christian or any one of the 4000 odd religions in the world today that believe in a god.  Any god. The word religious…

Is there a God? How do we answer this question?

Is there a God? How do we answer this question?

Blog, Faith Journal
Is there a God? Often, at night, when I tuck my kids into bed, we talk. And in the comfort of their beds and the dull glow of the night light they share events of the day. A few days ago as I kissed my 13 year old goodnight, she revealed a conversation that she had had with a classmate that day.  I’m not sure how the conversation started but my daughter had mentioned church and her classmate said “what’s the point of going to church if there is no God? Earlier in the morning this same girl had confided that her mum was terminally ill with cancer. Oh my! What do you say to a young teen who is about to lose her mum and doesn’t know the hope…

Why do we suffer adversity?

Why do we suffer adversity?

Blog, Faith Journal
Why do we suffer adversity?  Have you ever asked this question?  Especially as Christians! We tend to think that the Christian walk should be easy, that a loving father God would spare us from adversity. That he would want us to flourish! Heck, that He would ensure that we flourish.  After all, we're His followers aren't we? So why do we suffer adversity? In my garden, we have a mango tree. In the seven years that we’ve lived in our house we’ve had one year where it flourished. Flourish is defined as to grow or develop in a healthy way, especially as the result of a particularly congenial environment.  I wonder , in the context of life, what is meant by a congenial environment? That one year, we had mangoes coming out…

Amazing Testimonies to Strengthen Your Faith!

Amazing Testimonies to Strengthen Your Faith!

Blog, Faith Journal
Do you love hearing testimonies as much as I do?   I love reading amazing testimonies that strengthen my faith or hearing real stories from real people! Reading mission biographies and listening to people share their journey to knowing God is one way to keep the fire burning.  It sparks something in me that reminds me that each of us is precious to Jesus.  That he pursues each of us in our unique journey.  Amazing! To me, hearing testimonies is like reading a map with hundreds of little roads all leading to the feet of our Father. Some time ago I was asked in a job interview to share my testimony and I totally blanked.  I had never shared my testimony and had never really thought it worthy of sharing. I…

Where should I start reading the Bible?

Where should I start reading the Bible?

Bible Study, Faith Journal
Oh goodness!!  Where should I start reading the Bible? Have you ever asked yourself this question?  Where should I start reading the Bible?  I have.  Many times. When I was younger I used to hold my Bible upright on my lap and let it fall open in hopes that God would miraculously open His word to the exact page, chapter and verse that was meant for me at that moment.  And that that verse would be the answer to all my burning questions! I have no doubt that God could do that if He chose to.  And that He does do it in some situations but, if you're serious about reading the Bible and really getting to grips with the whole story then that is no way to go about it.…

Magic, Make Believe and Fantasy. Should Christians Engage?

Magic, Make Believe and Fantasy. Should Christians Engage?

Blog, Faith Journal, Parenting
The question on my mind today is "Should we, as Christians, be engaging with media that includes magic, make believe and fantasy?" Magic, make believe and fantasy - What's all the Fuss? Magic, make believe and fantasy are all around us in the media but should we, as Christians, be swooning over Damon Salvatore, or running down the halls of Hogwarts with Hermione? I remember back when I was in my first years of teaching in a small Christian school, they had a book sale.  The book company set up rows of tables in the hall and parents were invited to come and purchase books for their children. They were also encouraged to purchase a book for the school. One of the books donated was called the TF letters.  And…

What’s My Purpose in Life?

What’s My Purpose in Life?

Bible Study, Blog, Faith Journal
So what's my purpose in life?  What's your purpose?  It's a really big question! My hubby and I have had this conversation many times. The idea that we are all put on this earth for a purpose and that we go through trials and tribulations for a reason, makes us wonder and ask "what's my purpose in life? " Is my purpose tied up with my work? My family? Is my job my purpose? Is it separate from my day to day life? So today I thought it might be good to dig a little deeper into this idea that we are all put on this earth for a purpose.  I can't be the only one that has these regular thoughts, can I? Well, the Bible says in Romans 8:28…
