The Book of John – Chapter 1

The Book of John – Chapter 1

Bible Study, Blog
Hey, I'm so glad you've found your way back.  In my previous post about where to start reading the Bible, I mentioned that the book of John was a really good starting point.  John tells the story of Jesus and allows us to really get to know His character and what He stood for. If you've never read the Bible before, this really is the best place to start.  Ultimately God sent Jesus into the world so that we could get to know Him.  So that we could know how much He loves us and we could be convinced to love Him. If you haven't read Where to start reading the Bible, I really recommend you head there first.  In that post we looked into the background of the book…

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard – Matthew 20

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard – Matthew 20

Bible Study, Blog
The parable of the workers in the vineyard Matthew 20 :1-16, is told by Jesus to the crowds who are gathering to hear Him speak.  As explained in a previous post about where Jesus was the week before Easter, Jesus used parables or stories to speak to His followers in ways they could easily understand. So Jesus tells this parable and He likens the kingdom of heaven, or God, to the wealthy landowner of the story.  To read this parable for yourself go here to Matthew 20:1-16. But let's break it down. The wealthy landowner hires some men to work in his fields.  The first group of men start early in the morning and he tells them he will pay them a denarius for the days work.  They are very happy.  This is a good…

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet. Matthew 22:1-14

Bible Study, Blog
It's Easter Sunday morning and I was awake with the birds reading Matthew 22 1 - 14.  It's great to wake up before the rest of the household and have some time to reflect before the noise and excitement and the shouts of Happy Easter begin. Following on from the the post where we talked about what Jesus was doing the week before Easter, I wanted to look Matthew 22 1-14 and the Parable of the Wedding Banquet this morning. It never ceases to amaze me how, time and time again, I pick up the Bible to read and God reveals something that feels new and relevant. The Parable of the Wedding Banquet - Matthew 22 1-14 In Matthew 22, Jesus has been spending some time in the temple and…

The week before Easter! Matthew 20-25

The week before Easter! Matthew 20-25

Bible Study, Blog
Where was Jesus the week before Easter?  Have you ever thought about Jesus, where He was and what He was doing the week before Easter? In the hustle and bustle of the end of the school term, buying Easter eggs and planning what to do for the  lovely, long, Easter weekend I was prompted by our pastors Facebook post to ask this question? Now if you're like me, and you're in Church every year on the Easter weekend, you would have heard the story of Palm Sunday many times.  This is the story where Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people who came to see him lay their cloaks and palm leaves on the ground as Jesus walked by. You would also be fairly familiar with the…

Where should I start reading the Bible?

Where should I start reading the Bible?

Bible Study, Faith Journal
Oh goodness!!  Where should I start reading the Bible? Have you ever asked yourself this question?  Where should I start reading the Bible?  I have.  Many times. When I was younger I used to hold my Bible upright on my lap and let it fall open in hopes that God would miraculously open His word to the exact page, chapter and verse that was meant for me at that moment.  And that that verse would be the answer to all my burning questions! I have no doubt that God could do that if He chose to.  And that He does do it in some situations but, if you're serious about reading the Bible and really getting to grips with the whole story then that is no way to go about it.…

What’s My Purpose in Life?

What’s My Purpose in Life?

Bible Study, Blog, Faith Journal
So what's my purpose in life?  What's your purpose?  It's a really big question! My hubby and I have had this conversation many times. The idea that we are all put on this earth for a purpose and that we go through trials and tribulations for a reason, makes us wonder and ask "what's my purpose in life? " Is my purpose tied up with my work? My family? Is my job my purpose? Is it separate from my day to day life? So today I thought it might be good to dig a little deeper into this idea that we are all put on this earth for a purpose.  I can't be the only one that has these regular thoughts, can I? Well, the Bible says in Romans 8:28…

Understanding the Bible

Bible Study, Blog
Have you ever picked up the Bible and you didn’t know where to start? Or maybe you did and you had no idea what you were reading! I guess, to first time readers, it would seem obvious to start reading the Bible from the beginning, in Genesis, but Genesis is hard and it may raise more questions then it answers. Randomly opening the Bible to start reading may also land you in a world of confusion, particularly if you landed in Song of Solomon, Job or Revelation. Trust me, if this is you, you’re not alone. When I was growing up and attending Sunday School, I was told all the traditional Bible stories about David and Noah, Moses, Joshua and of course Jesus. They were simple stories of hero’s and…
